Organizations have been ramping up their cloud adoption and expanding their digital infrastructures, but often without much concern for the environmental impact of these operations. Unfortunately, the impact is substantial: The Climate Neutral Group estimates that data centers now account for 2% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Many companies are invested in improving their sustainability efforts, but have overlooked data centers when it comes to the decarbonization of operations. Balancing the need for substantial data infrastructure with more eco-friendly policies should be top of all organizational to-do lists. Rather than a competition between corporations, these initiatives should be focused on the larger benefit of a healthier world. That’s why creating a specific data center decarbonization strategy will be key.
