Infosys, StarHub and TSYS Reduce Costs, Improve Efficiency and Increase Reliability with HDS Solutions
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — June 28, 2011 — Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT/TSE: 6501), today announced that its strategy of enabling data center transformation through IT solutions that are virtualized, automated, cloud-ready and sustainable continues to generate customer success around the globe. Customers including Infosys (India), StarHub (Singapore) and TSYS (United States) are proof that the HDS vision and product strategy for cost-effectively re-architecting the data center and optimizing existing IT assets to support various cloud delivery models is what customers need. These customers are saving the equivalent of millions of dollars in storage costs and are experiencing data center reliability and availability benefits that far surpass competitive offerings.
As the data center evolves through virtualization and cloud strategies, the physical boundaries of IT systems are diminishing. This notion that “Data Has No Center” conveys that data is ubiquitous and that the ability to turn data into valuable business information that is available anytime, anywhere is more important than where the data is physically located.
“Data is critical to every aspect of our personal and business lives, but it’s not useful if it’s stuck in silos or inaccessible when and how we need it,” said Brian Householder, senior vice president, Worldwide Marketing and Business Development, Hitachi Data Systems. “HDS is solving this real business problem by transforming traditional, siloed data centers into information centers where customer data becomes useful and actionable. Companies like Infosys, StarHub and TSYS are experiencing this data center transformation with HDS and can now leverage their enhanced technology infrastructures to better support their business goals.”
Infosys: Using Automation to Achieve Cloud Flexibility
To offer IT and consulting services to its Global 2000 customers cost-effectively, Infosys, Ltd. needed a flexible cloud model its project teams could use to juggle 8,000 active mission critical projects, 20% of which required a dedicated infrastructure, as well as a model that could support telecommuting and work from home to ensure employees could connect to the infrastructure from any device and from any location. HDS delivered on-demand scaling, speed, availability and real-time data access through its cloud offerings, leading to a 10 percent savings on Infosys’ storage investments. Specifically, HDS optimized the firm’s storage infrastructure, helped users experience high availability of information, and from an administration standpoint, helped significantly ease application migration using a single fabric to manage the entire infrastructure.
“In our endeavor to be a trusted cloud ecosystem integrator for our clients, we look to lead the way by adopting cloud internally. HDS has been a key partner in this journey,” said Muralikrishna, SVP and group head, Computers and Communication Division, Infosys Ltd. “With HDS, we have been able to create a flexible cloud model for our operations and also optimize our storage infrastructure. This has helped us save on our storage investments and respond faster to our customer needs.”
StarHub: HDS Delivers on the Promise of Lowered TCO
StarHub is Singapore’s fully integrated information communications company, offering entertainment services to both corporate and consumer customers. Like many media and entertainment companies, StarHub has experienced tremendous data growth, and it tried to manage these challenges by looking at better IT integration and consolidation measures.
StarHub chose HDS solutions for their ability to lower the cost of StarHub’s data management services, providing a positive ROI for the company. StarHub is also capitalizing on HDS solutions for dynamic provisioning and better storage utilization, which are critical for achieving virtualization benefits and for reducing total cost of ownership savings, which StarHub has done to the tune of $400,000.
“We need to stay ahead of the curve in how we deliver services and how we cost-effectively store information from our customers,” said David Skinner, vice president, Information Services, StarHub. “HDS is committed to our success at every layer of their engagement with us, from the engineers to the management team. With HDS, we’ve continually experienced year-on-year cost savings, while benefiting from the most efficient, high availability (99.99%) storage on a sustained basis. That’s something that’s very important to us as a service provider providing critical services to external customers.”
TSYS: Improving Business Continuity without Sacrificing Sustainability
TSYS is an 8,000-employee provider of global payments, working with financial institutions to provide payment processing and transactions to customers and managing about 10 billion payment transactions per year, and 1,200 authorizations per second. To sustain this capacity and scale, and to bulletproof its business continuity planning, TSYS needed an IT infrastructure and cloud partner that could continually improve its infrastructure availability, reliability and security at an affordable price. Additionally, TSYS needed to enhance disaster recovery, manage the ever-growing cost of encrypting and storing data, and better allocate its assets by reclaiming unused storage.
Working with HDS, who was able to make nondisruptive system changes, TSYS leveraged the company’s virtualization solutions to reclaim close to 600 terabytes of storage in the past 16 months, resulting in significant savings. “HDS helped us reduce our cost per terabyte of storage, giving us the ability to manage more resources with fewer staff and manage it all in a central location,” said Wayne Smith, group executive, Global IT Operations, TSYS. “Additionally, HDS helped us encrypt all of our data at rest, addressing our security concerns. HDS solutions have proven to be automated, reliable and sustainable, making the most efficient use of the equipment we have. Bottom line – we have a lot of trust and confidence in the HDS infrastructure we have in place, and with it, we don’t have to spend money when we don’t need to – that’s a huge benefit for us.”
