Press Release
Enables Broadband Providers to Easily Analyze Massive Volumes of Stream Data
November 13, 2012,Framingham, MA — Active Broadband Networks, an innovative supplier of next-generation operational support systems (OSS) for broadband providers, today announced that it has integrated Pentaho Big Data Analytics with its Dynamic Broadband Service Manager (DBSM), providing network operators with a powerful suite of tools for analyzing the massive volume of stream data collected by the DBSM from network elements in broadband access networks.
The DBSM uses streaming protocols including IPDR, RADIUS accounting and IPFIX/NetFLow to collect network, service and subscriber usage data, which is processed and stored in a Cassandra NoSQL Big Data database. Network operations personnel run reports against this data for day-to-day network performance monitoring, while network engineers and product managers can analyze the data for capacity and service planning. Pentaho simplifies Big Data management, reporting and analytics with integrated support for Cassandra and a suite of intuitive, easy-to-use business analytics and data integration tools.
"We needed a business intelligence solution that integrated with our Big Data storage system so our customers could easily analyze and generate reports against the massive volumes of data we collect," said Chris Gunner, chief technology officer of Active Broadband Networks. "We chose Pentaho, a leading-edge provider of open-source solutions for Big Data business analytics, because of its ease of use, intuitive and powerful report designer, and Pentaho's ability to integrate, manipulate and enrich data during the analytics process."
Broadband service management demands high-performance collection, processing and storage of huge volumes of network, service and usage data that is streamed from existing elements in the network, such as cable modem termination systems (CMTS) and DSL service gateways. Active Broadband's DBSM leverages the Cassandra NoSQL database to address these stringent performance and scalability requirements. Pentaho's comprehensive business analytics platform is pre-integrated with the Cassandra data to provide reporting, analytics, dashboards and data integration.
Pentaho's tools are highly intuitive and easy to use, allowing network operators to create their own custom reports or modify the suite of standard reports provided by Active Broadband Networks, without having to enlist the services of IT database specialists.
"By bundling the complete Pentaho Business Analytics platform with its data integration, business analytics and Big Data capabilities natively integrated with the Cassandra NoSQL database, Active Broadband has given its customers a cost-effective and intuitive way to track and analyze terabytes of network and subscriber usage data," said Richard Daley, chief strategy officer, Pentaho Corporation. "As a result of Active Broadband's unique Big Data offering, its broadband provider customers have the information they need to deploy usage-based services and make data-driven decisions."
