Data Industry Leaders Chart "The Future of IoT" in Seminal Book

August 10, 2017

August 10, 2017, San Francisco,CA — Pentaho, a Hitachi Group Company today announced the availability of a new book, "The Future of IoT: Leveraging the Shift to a Data Centric World," which was co-authored by Pentaho's senior director of Enterprise Solutions, Wael Elrifai; former president & CEO of Infobright, Don DeLoach; and Gartner, Inc. Research Director, Emil Berthelsen.

In much the same way that a ‘Magic Eye’ poster image suddenly appears, in 2013 various technological components came together and materialized into a gigantic global infrastructure called the Internet of Things (IoT). Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of about 30 billion objects by 2020 and a market whose revenues exceed $470 billion. With so much commercial upside, today's IoT is like the 'wild west' with countless business and consumer technology companies setting out to stake their claims. However, technology strategists that don’t know where IoT is heading risk making very expensive mistakes and - worst case scenario - having to start all over again.

The IoT strategist’s blueprint
Three analytics software industry experts and thought leaders Don Deloach, Wael Elrifai and Emil Berthelsen recently published “The Future of IoT” - a blueprint and invaluable reference that inspires and informs senior IT strategists, architects and product managers on how to design robust, sustainable and profitable IoT roadmaps.

“First Receiver” – a new model for the connected data economy
The book's central argument is that over time IoT's focus will shift from siloed commercial and consumer products to enterprise applications whose underlying data is shared and sold across different departments and also externally to partners, customers and other businesses. In this context, data primacy - establishing which entity controls the capture and propagation of the data, and to whom and how - becomes a key consideration in future governance and deployment architectures. The key is delivering the right data to the right constituent in the right way at the right time. Any underlying data element may be propagated to multiple consuming entities, but the key is leveraging the underlying utility value of the data.

To fully leverage this shift to enterprise and deal with the data primacy issue, the authors recommend establishing what they call a "First Receiver" architecture and governance model. In this model, one entity acts as the primary receiver of the IoT data and is responsible for all aspects of data ownership including replication, cleansing, security and enrichment for the benefit of all other connected data 'consumers'.

The Future of IoT is rich with anecdotes, case studies and research to support this approach.

Availability
The Future of IoT is available now in paperback, hardcover and as an ebook on Amazon and through popular booksellers including Barnes and Noble, Apple, BookShelf, and may multiple other outlets.
